The first 12-plus minutes of Wednesday’s show were devoted to the hearings, and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee chairman Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) ongoing tangle with the former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who headed up America’s COVID response under President Trump and then President Biden.Fauci, knighted as a health savior by the elitist press, has come in for condemnation for overzealous guidance (mandatory masks, closed schools and stores, isolation of the elderly) and hypocrisy (rubbing shoulders with the elite and throwing out first pitches at baseball games while lecturing others to mask up and avoid crowds).The News Hour launched its Wednesday evening hearing coverage with a surprisingly strong six-minute story from the hearings by Ali Rogin, followed by a more typical defensive interview with the Atlantic’s Katherine Wu accusing the right of making Fauci a scapegoat. In fact, PBS devoted more airtime specifically to soundbites of Paul’s pointed questions and observations than the three major evening news programs combined.
