The House bipartisan taskforce to investigate the attempted murder of Donald Trump is taking action. It will begin a 4-month investigation that puts several important agencies on the spot.
Mike Kelly, the chair of the task force (R-Pa.), and Rep. Jason Crow, the ranking member (D-Colo.), are sending two letters to Homeland Security and the Justice Departments requesting any information and documents that were already produced by House and Senate committees regarding the shooting.
A briefing of the staff from DHS and DOJ is requested by no later than August 16 to “discuss Task Force priorities in regard to information and documents moving forward”.
A first letter was sent to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Wray. And, one letter was addressed to Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas, and Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe Jr.
Kelly and Crow make it clear in their letter that they are taking over the House’s investigative efforts. They write that the Task Force will now be the sole source of information and documents for all House Committees or Members and that agencies should produce documents directly to the Task Force.
Before the taskforce was formed late last month several committees began investigating security failings around the Trump rally in Butler (Pa.), where a shooter opened fire 150 yards from the stage from a roof. The attack resulted in two deaths, one of them being the gunman. Trump also sustained injuries.
